PMA COMMUNITY STANDARDS
How brands compete—distinctly, respectfully, and without confusion.
The Pickleball Manufacturers Association (PMA) exists to foster innovation, trust, and integrity across the pickleball equipment ecosystem. These standards are intended to promote clear brand differentiation, encourage fair competition and originality, maintain a respectful and collaborative member community, and reduce market confusion and internal conflict.
PMA operates beyond minimum legal thresholds. Membership reflects a commitment to higher industry standards.
1. Guiding Principles
Clarity of Identity
Members should maintain a distinct and recognizable brand identity that is not easily confused with another member.
Respect for Brand Expression
Members must avoid adopting or closely mirroring defining visual elements, themes, or narratives that are strongly associated with another member, especially when tied to mission, story, or community impact.
Originality Over Derivation
While common materials, patterns, and technologies exist across the industry, members are expected to differentiate their expression rather than rely on designs that could reasonably be perceived as derivative.
Good Faith Participation
Members are expected to act in good faith, prioritizing the health of the industry and community over technical loopholes or minimal compliance.
2. Design & Brand Differentiation Standard
PMA recognizes that certain elements, such as carbon fiber textures, geometric patterns, and honeycomb structures, may be common within the sport.
This standard may apply to:
- Visual motifs (patterns, symbols, layouts)
- Thematic identity (animals, causes, mission-driven concepts)
- Signature product aesthetics
Not Acceptable
- Designs that create reasonable confusion with another member’s identity
- Use of core brand motifs in a way that appears imitative or overly similar
- Replication of mission-linked or symbolic elements closely associated with another member
Acceptable
- Use of common industry elements when they are secondary, non-defining, or clearly differentiated
- Independent design approaches that do not create confusion in the market
3. Respectful Competitive Conduct
- Compete on product quality, innovation, and service
- Avoid misrepresentation of another member’s products or brand
- Refrain from actions that intentionally create confusion or false association
- Engage in professional, constructive dialogue when conflicts arise
4. Review & Resolution Process
- PMA will assess alignment with community standards
- The member will be notified and given an opportunity to respond
- If misalignment is determined, the member will define a path to alignment within a reasonable timeframe
5. Membership Alignment Requirement
Adherence to these standards is a condition of PMA membership.
If a member declines to align with these standards, or fails to demonstrate a reasonable path toward alignment, PMA reserves the right to deny membership, suspend participation, or revoke membership status.
6. Final Note
Membership is not only about participation—it is about upholding the integrity of the ecosystem we are building together.
