FREEQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the benefits to joining PMA?

Providing confidence to your customers should not come with a premium, especially since YOU will decide what is a quality product, service or content. No need to pay exorbitant fees just for you to communicate quality in what you do.

Do I get to put the logo on everything I produce?

YES! One standard fee allows us to market the association and brands interested in growing the sport of pickleball. Therefore, we want to remove friction by allowing companies to place the PMA APPROVED logo on anything that will grow the sport, and communicate your commitment to quality.

Is this meant to replace other pickleball equipment certifications?

No, if you want to have a product available to other organizations, we encourage you to follow their standards. PMA APPROVED is meant for companies and individuals interested in growing the sport with as little interference from 3rd parties that don't know your business as well as you do.

Do I have to be a manufacturer to join PMA?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! We encourage anyone in the industry: instructors, content creators, service providers, venues, etc to support the goals of the trade organization.

PADDLE SPECIFICATIONS

Aug 1, 2025

Below is a proposed Pickleball Manufacturers Association (PMA) paddle specification that leverages the size and weight limits from USA Pickleball’s January 2025 Equipment Standards Manual while removing material and surface restrictions and encouraging innovation. The PMA is committed to growing the sport by fostering creativity and gameenhancing standards rather than limiting new ideas. Any paddle models that fall outside the dimensions below would require formal PMA approval.

PMA Paddle Overview

Size Standards – The overall size of a PMAapproved paddle is determined by the combined length and width (including any edge guard or butt cap). USA Pickleball limits this sum to 24 inches, and individual paddle length may not exceed 17 inches. PMA will retain these size limits so that paddles remain compatible with current play while allowing designers freedom within that envelope. There is no restriction on paddle thickness.

Weight Standards – The USA Pickleball manual states that paddle weight is unrestricted. PMA will adopt the same principle, allowing manufacturers to choose whatever weight best suits their design objectives and target players. No minimum or maximum weight will be imposed.

Innovation Encouraged – PMA deliberately does not prescribe core materials, facing materials, colors or surface textures. Manufacturers are free to explore new composites, foams, surface textures, colors and edgeguard technologies. We believe that innovation in these areas can enhance the sport by creating paddles that feel better, perform more consistently and broaden player choices. There are no PMA restrictions on paddle cores, surfaces or colors; creative experimentation is encouraged.

Approval of Unique Designs – Should a manufacturer design a paddle whose length, width or combined dimensions exceed the standards below, the paddle must be submitted to PMA for individual review and approval before it may be marketed as PMAcompliant. This ensures that truly novel designs are assessed for safety and playability while keeping an open door for breakthrough products.

PMA Paddle Specifications

Specification

PMA Standard

Rationale

Maximum length

17 inches (43.18 cm)

Retains USA Pickleball limit for compatibility; ensures paddles are not excessively long while allowing diverse shapes.

Combined length + width

24 inches (60.96 cm) maximum

Mirrors USA Pickleball’s combined dimension standard and defines the overall footprint of the paddle.

Thickness

No restriction

Allows innovation in cores and surface layering without a thickness cap.

Weight

No restriction

Provides flexibility for different playing styles and materials.

Summary

The PMA paddle specification maintains the familiar length, width and weight benchmarks set by USA Pickleball, ensuring that paddles remain playable and consistent with current expectations. Beyond these dimensions, the PMA intentionally removes restrictions on materials, surface textures and colors to encourage manufacturers to innovate freely. This framework supports a vibrant, evolving marketplace where new ideas can flourish while providing clear guidance on the fundamental dimensions of the paddle.
